The pre-Columbian Aztec ruins of Tlatelolco, the 17th century Spanish Templo de Santiago and the modern Foreign Ministry building together offer a quick glance at the major periods of Mexico's history.  Reading between the lines here offers even more.  Here in 1521, Cortes defeated the Aztec and an inscription at the site reads "This was neither victory or defeat.  It was the sad birth of the mestizo people which is Mexico today"  This is also where several hundred protesters were massacred by government troops just before the 1968 olympics.
