So the thing about Petra that takes most visitors unawares is the sheer size of the site. Westerners tend to have a sense of Petra as consisting of the narrow canyon and the carved facade at the end. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. If you continue past the treasury, the canyon opens up to reveal a wide canyon floor with countless buildings carved into its walls.
