The Horsethief Trail is a brand new (Spring 2005) singletrack north of Taos. The trail runs right along the rim of the Rio Grande gorge, and offers spectacular views of the canyon along the way. Local bike shops have maps of the trail, with intricate directions to the trailhead and a suggestion to do the trail as a loop, returning on a network of dirt roads. I opted to do the trail as an out and back, which felt like the right choice.  The trail is scenic enough that seeing the same thing in reverse wasn't a bad thing at all, in fact it was like two different trails.

Views of the Sangre de Christos from the trailhead.

The beginning of the trail, the big thing that you can't see here is the gorge.

There it is.
